Iberdrola Plans To Expand Europe’s Largest Onshore Wind Farm

0

Iberdrola's ScottishPower Renewables has submitted a planning application to the Scottish government for a five-turbine extension to the Whitelee Wind Farm, located near Glasgow.

The extension would generate up to 12 MW of renewable energy and increase the overall capacity of Europe's largest onshore wind farm to 551 MW. The initial 140 turbines at the Whitelee Wind Farm were fully completed in May 2009, and two additional extensions comprising 75 turbines have since been approved. Those 75 turbines have been constructed at the site. Commissioning is ongoing, with full power generation expected in early fall.

The five new turbines would be located to the west of the existing site in East Ayrshire. Once complete, the third extension would also add an additional 3 km to the wind farm's publicly accessible tracks and paths, and could be used for recreational purposes, ScottishPower Renewables says.
