GE And Highview Sign Global Energy Storage Collaboration Agreement

Seeking a larger role in the energy storage sector, GE has signed a global licensing and technology collaboration agreement with Highview Power Storage, a U.K.-based supplier of large-scale liquid air energy storage (LAES) systems.

The companies say they will explore opportunities to integrate Highview's LAES technology in peaker power plants where GE gas turbines and gas engines are currently or will be installed to increase power plant efficiency and grid reliability. In addition, the companies say the LAES technology should enable utilities to add more wind, solar and biogas energy to the grid.

"Operators increasingly need to integrate intermittent and non-dispatchable renewable energy sources into the current energy grid," says GE's Luca Maria Rossi. "Energy storage is an application that can help address this need."
