A product that prevents icing on wind turbines and a solution designed to combat changes in frequency on the power grid were the winning entries of Gamesa's fourth annual technology competition.
The Bladeshield anti-icing system, which was conceived by three of Gamesa's engineers, consists of an anti-freeze paint that not only prevents the formation of ice but also boosts the coating's resistance to erosion. This new system can be applied across all of Gamesa onshore and offshore platforms and the blades of other original equipment manufacturers.
The other innovation, notes Gamesa, combats changes in frequency while on the grid. According to the company, when the turbine control system detects a change of frequency in the power grid, the wind turbines immediately inject the energy stored in the powertrain. Previously, Gamesa notes, such corrective action occurred as long as 30 seconds after the disruptive event.
The Patent and Inventors Competition fosters development of innovative technology that the company can use to remain competitive. Each technology is awaiting its patent, notes Gamesa.
