Gamesa Completes Main Assembly For Offshore Prototype

Gamesa says it has completed the main assembly of Spain's first prototype offshore wind turbine, located at the Arinaga Quay in Gran Canary Island.

According to Gamesa, the tower, nacelle and blades were shipped from Bilbao port to the Canary Islands. The tower measures 90 meters and is made by Windar, a joint venture between Gamesa and Daniel Alonso.

The nacelle measures over 12.5 meters long and is 4 meters tall and wide. It weighs 72 tons. Once the nacelle was hoisted onto the tower, work began to assemble the three blades, each of which measures 62.5 meters long and weighs 15 tons, making them the longest blades ever produced and transported in Spain.

Gamesa will now begin the turbine's electrical assembly and grid connection work. It expects the turbine to achieve certification by the end of the year, with installation of the first units in 2014.

This offshore turbine, with a rotor diameter of 128 meters, ensures reliability and maximizes energy output, notes the company, adding that it has invested more than half a million engineering hours in the turbine's design process.
