Boston-based wind energy developer First Wind has announced that the construction of its 69 MW Kawailoa Wind project – Hawaii's largest wind farm – has been completed and that it has entered commercial operation.

Located on Kamehameha Schools' Kawailoa Plantation lands on Oahu's north shore, the project utilizes 30 Siemens wind turbines installed by RMT Inc. The wind farm will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of approximately 14,500 homes on the island and, at full output, has the potential to meet as much as 10% of Oahu's annual electricity demand, according to First Wind.

The Kawailoa project has a power purchase agreement with Hawaiian Electric Co. It is First Wind's second project on Oahu and its fourth in the Hawaiian islands.
