The first of 35 Siemens 6 MW turbines has been successfully erected at the 210 MW Westermost Rough offshore wind farm in the U.K.
A joint venture between DONG Energy (50%) and its partners Marubeni Corp. (25%) and the U.K. Green Investment Bank (25%), the project marks the first time that the Siemens 6 MW turbine will be used on a commercial scale. DONG Energy says the machines, which feature a 154-meter rotor and have been tested on demonstration sites, allow the developer to provide more energy output from fewer turbines.
Michael Hannibal, CEO of Siemens Wind Power, comments, ‘Only a few days after our D6 wind turbine obtained its final certification, it is in place for commercial operation. We are very proud to achieve this milestone on the way to enhancing efficiency and lowering the cost of offshore wind energy with our innovative direct-drive technology.’
Turbine installation at Westermost Rough is slated for completion in the first half of 2015, with A2SEA's Sea Challenger installation vessel handling the offshore work.
