North American Windpower: Redington Wind Farm On Hold For Reevaluation

Maine's Land Use Regulation Commission has chosen not to vote on the proposed 90 MW Redington Wind Farm in Franklin County, Maine.

According to Catherine Carroll, the commission staff's director, the board of commissioners directed the staff to recommend denial of the wind farm. In December of 2006, the staff recommended the board approve the project. (See "Commission's Staff Recommends Approval For Western Maine Wind Farm.")

Maine Mountain Power, a joint venture between Yarmouth, Maine-based Endless Energy Co. and Irvine, Calif.-headquartered Edison Mission Group, is the developer of the project. According to Carroll, Maine Mountain Power had asked the staff to hold off on the denial recommendation until it knows what actions it will take.

Maine Mountain Power was disappointed with the unique ruling, says Charley Parnell of Edison Mission Group, however, it will use this opportunity to meet with its development team and legal group to reevaluate the project. At this time, the company does not know how long this process will take - the commission did not give a time limit.

Parnell says NIMBY (not in my backyard) issues, such as the visual impact of the wind farm, were brought up at the hearing. He adds that Maine Mountain Power has received widespread support for the project.
