CPS Energy, a San Antonio, Texas-based municipally owned natural gas and electricity supplier, has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Babcock & Brown and Rutland, Vt.-based Catamount Energy to obtain additional energy from the Cottonwood Creek Wind Farm located in Nolan County, Texas. Babcock & Brown and Catamount Energy funded the development and construction of the wind farm.

The Cottonwood Creek Wind Farm was completed in 2005. An additional 181 turbines, capable of generating 240 MW of electricity for CPS Energy, are currently being constructed, the company says. The second phase of the project is scheduled to be complete by late spring of 2007.

CPS Energy already receives wind power from Cottonwood Creek and the Desert Sky Wind Farm in western Texas. According to CPS Energy, its customers can purchase renewable energy certificates in blocks of 100 kWh for $3 each through its Windtricity program.
