GE Energy and Nanjing High Speed & Accurate Gear Co. (NGC) have signed an agreement to jointly develop gearboxes for GE's 1.5 MW wind turbines.

As part of the agreement, GE will contribute Six Sigma quality processes and technical consulting to the design process of the gearbox, the company says. NGC senior management will attend training sessions at GE's development center in Crotonville, N.Y., as well.

"With NGC's experience and expertise in the manufacturing of high quality and accurate gears and GE's advanced technology, the partnership will benefit not only the parties involved, but also the customers and the gear industry of China as a whole," comments Hu Yueming, NGC's chairman and president.

According to GE, nearly 5,000 of the 1.5 MW turbines have been installed or are committed for projects worldwide. Steve Bertamini, GE China's chairman and chief executive officer adds, "By integrating the experience and skills of both companies, we will expand our capability to meet the needs of customers in the rapidly growing renewable energy industry worldwide."
