Iberdrola Renewables has announced a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to sell 30 MW of power from its Rugby wind power project to the Upper Midwest Municipal Power Agency (UMMPA), a municipal joint action agency.

Iberdrola says the UMMPA will provide the energy to 15 member communities in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, helping meet their state renewable energy requirements.

Iberdrola's 149 MW Rugby project, located in Pierce County, N.D., features 71 2.1 MW wind turbines manufactured by Suzlon. The project supports the local economy by contributing substantial revenue to the community through payments to Pierce County and to landowners, which together totals more than $2 million annually, Iberdrola notes, adding the land continues to be used to grow corn, wheat, canola and sunflowers.
