The Westerly Sun is reporting that the Town of Westerly, R.I., is pulling the plug on a plan to erect two wind turbines.

The newspaper notes that the decision came after a meeting in which residents living near the proposed site of the turbines expressed concerns over the project, which also would need state approval.

The project's developer, North Kingston, R.I.-based Wind Energy Development, was selected in December as the town's wind energy partner.

At the time of the announcement, the newspaper reports the developer promised to save the town $14 million or more over the course of a 20-year lease through electricity it sought to generate with the two turbines. The project was intended to meet the town’s municipal electricity needs excluding power used by the school system.
