Charlotte, N.C.-based Duke Energy has begun commercial operation at its 59 MW Ocotillo Wind Farm, located in Howard County, Texas.
Construction of the 28-turbine site began in February, and the electricity produced from the wind farm will be delivered into the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas transmission system and will be sold to Barclays Bank PLC.
‘We set a goal of having approximately 500 MW of wind energy in service by the end of 2008,’ says Wouter van Kempen, president of Duke Energy Generation Services. ‘We're on schedule to meet that target, as well as our goal of having 5,000 MW in our development pipeline by year end.’
This summer, Duke Energy began operating a 30 MW wind farm near Cheyenne, Wyo., and will bring additional wind turbines into commercial operation later this year at the Notrees site located in Ector and Winkler counties, Texas.
