Following a competitive tender, DONG Energy has chosen Vestas' V164-8.0 MW as the preferred turbine for the Burbo Bank Extension Offshore Wind Farm.
The project has a maximum capacity of 258 MW and is located 7 km off the English west coast beside the existing 90 MW Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm. In December 2012, DONG Energy and Vestas entered into an agreement to cooperate on a number of test activities for the prototype of the V164-8.0 MW at the Test Centre in Osterild to accelerate the development of the turbine.
"The performance of the 8 MW turbine from Vestas is very promising," says Samuel Leupold, executive vice president of DONG Energy. "I see this as a very concrete step toward reducing the cost of electricity from offshore wind."
DONG Energy says a final turbine-supply deal is subject to the new project being awarded a "contract for difference" and a detailed agreement between Vestas and the developer, which is expected to be signed later this year.
