DONG Energy has started shipment preparations for its offshore substation and jacket foundations needed for the 277 MW Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm, located the North Sea.
With a total capacity of 3,500 tons and a height of 65 meters, DONG Energy reports the massive shipment is slowly moving forward on a load-out platform designed for heavy loads in order to be shipped to the construction site, located approximately 54 kilometers off the East Frisian North Sea coast and installed on the seabed.
If everything goes according to plan, the components will be placed on the barge. Depending on the weather conditions, nearly 30 hours later, the components will arrive at the construction site where the substation and eight-legged steel jacket construction will be installed.
Borkum Riffgrund 1, expected to be operational in 2014, is DONG's first German offshore wind farm project.
