Westar Energy, Horizon Wind Energy and the Empire District Electric Co. will dedicate the Meridian Way Wind Farm in Cloud County, Kan., with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Oct. 7.

The Meridian Way Wind Farm is a 201 MW project owned and operated by Horizon Wind Energy. Westar Energy will purchase energy produced from the 96 MW included in Phase II of the project. The Empire District Electric Co., based in Joplin, Mo., will purchase energy produced by the 105 MW to be produced by Phase I of the project.

‘Wind is a valuable commodity in Cloud County and throughout the state of Kansas,’ says Bill Moore, Westar Energy president and CEO. ‘We are celebrating the Meridian Way Wind Farm but, more importantly, we continue to meet the growing needs of our customers in an environmentally friendly way.’

Meridian Way consists of 67 Vestas V90-3.0 MW turbines and is expected to go online by the end of the year.
