Consumers Energy Begins Constructing 150 MW Wind Farm, Focuses On Safety

Michigan-based Consumers Energy has begun construction of its 150 MW Cross Winds Energy Park in Tuscola County, and the utility company says its top focus is safety going forward.

‘Consumers Energy and its contractors are committed to building Cross Winds Energy Park in the safest manner possible. Safety is our No. 1 priority,’ comments John Bulloch, project manager for the Cross Winds Energy Park. "A key part of our commitment to safety is openly communicating about construction activity that residents may encounter."

The company says it recently sent Akron and Columbia Township residents a "safety alert" post card. Consumers Energy urges motorists to be alert for construction traffic in these townships and throughout Tuscola County because many construction materials are coming from suppliers located in Michigan's Thumb, southeastern Michigan and other parts of the state.

Following agreements with the Tuscola County Road Commission, the project includes necessary maintenance, repair and upgrades to several area roads needed for transporting wind turbine components and other construction-related materials, Consumers Energy notes.

Southfield, Mich.-based Barton Malow is the lead contractor for the Cross Winds facility and will focus on construction of access drives and turbine foundations this fall. According to Consumers Energy, about 150 construction jobs will be created between now and into next year. The facility will include 62 GE wind turbines and is scheduled for operation in late 2014.
