The city of Durango, Colo., has committed to purchase 100% of its electricity from wind power through La Plata Electric Association (LPEA), a Colorado cooperative that provides energy services to its members on a nonprofit basis.
Durango currently purchases wind power from LPEA's Green Power program. Its most recent purchase will increase its commitment by approximately 40%, the companies say. In addition, the city will work with LPEA representatives to reduce electric energy bills through energy efficiency, conservation, and electricity load and demand-side management.
‘We are all becoming increasingly aware of how important 'buying local' is for our economy,’ says Greg Munro, LPEA's chief executive officer. ‘City officials understand also that by purchasing green power through LPEA, they are actually buying real wind power and not just energy credits.’
