The GaspÃ© campus of CÃ©gep de la GaspÃ©sie et des Ã�les has received funding for a research project as part of the program of the CORUS Centre, a Murdochville-based research, development and technology transfer center operating in the field of wind energy in nordic environments.
The MinistÃ¨re de l'Ã�ducation, du Loisir et du Sport granted the CÃ©gep C$22,186.16 under its program for technological research. According to the organizations, the funds will be used to reassign teaching staff and hire an engineer to produce the drawings and technical specifications to build this research tool.
‘The CORUS Centre operates in a natural laboratory that offers the conditions needed to create and maintain ice,’ says Redouane Megateli, the scientific director of the CORUS Centre. ‘With an icing system, we will be able to produce long-lasting artificial icing events. This will give us the time we need to conduct all the desired tests, as well as to study and quantify the impacts of ice on the operation of the wind turbines in nordic conditions.’
The icing system will be used to reproduce icing events under real operating conditions and control their duration – the first system of this kind in the world, the CÃ©gep says. Ultimately, the system developed will serve to test and design de-icing systems for wind turbine blades.
