Toronto-based Carbonzero, a provider of renewable energy and energy efficiency voluntary offsets, has released an online tool giving Canadian federal election 2008 candidates from all parties the ability to make their individual campaigns carbon-neutral.
‘We calculated the average greenhouse gas emissions of a candidate's campaign by calculating the reasonable use of fossil fuels for electrical, heating and air conditioning for the campaign headquarters, and vehicle-use for the candidates, volunteers and staff,’ says Kate Holloway, CEO of Carbonzero.
The candidate offset purchase is equivalent to five tons of carbon dioxide and will be directed to projects that replace dirty fossil fuels with clean energy sources such as wind, solar, recaptured energy or projects that reduce fossil fuel combustion altogether.
Projects selected meet or exceed Carbonzero's standards for quality accountability and transparency. Carbon-neutral candidates will receive a digital carbon offset certificate and graphic from Carbonzero to promote their investment.
