Alstom has signed a letter of intent (LOI) to partner with a Finnish university and a team of developers to study how wind turbines respond under arctic climate conditions. The research, meant to further improve operations, performance and reliability, will also study the application of advanced ice detection sensors.
Alstom, the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), TuuliTapiola ky and TuuliSaimaa Oy signed the LOI at the inauguration of the 21 MW Muukko Wind Farm in Finland. The Muukko project, developed by TuuliTapiola ky and TuuliSaimaa Oy, is equipped with seven Alstom 3.0 MW ECO 110 wind turbines designed for medium- to low-wind sites and cold climates.
Under the new agreement, LUT will provide academic expertise through the active participation of professors and researchers, while TuuliMuukko will provide the Muukko wind turbines for empirical research and development (R&D) activities. Alstom will supervise the project.
"The research of turbine technology can't be valuable without authentic measurement with real equipment in different weather conditions," says Olli Pyrhonen, professor for wind power technology at LUT. "Muukko wind farm and the cooperation with Alstom will give us a unique opportunity to gather and analyze valuable research material."
Regarding the technology improvements, TuuliSaimaa Managing Director Petteri Laaksonen says, "I expect an even better de-icing process, improvements in production automation and turbine controls in order to increase the annual electricity production in the future."
