Alabama Power Co. confirms that the state's Public Service Commission has approved the utility's plan to purchase more than 400 MW of installed capacity from two Midwestern wind projects.

The utility will also purchase up to 202 MW of output from the Chisholm View Wind Project, located in Grant and Garfield counties, Okla. The wind farm is scheduled to begin operating at the end of the year.

Alabama Power will purchase up to 202 MW of output from the Buffalo Dunes Wind Project, located near Garden City, Kan. The project is scheduled to begin operating in 2014.

Both wind farms were developed by TradeWind Energy.

Alabama Power notes the power purchase agreements are among the largest for energy produced from wind farms among Southeast utilities, and each gives Alabama Power valuable flexibility.

The utility notes that it can use the energy and associated renewable energy credits as part of its service to local consumers, or it can sell those credits, separately from the energy, to outsiders.
